FAQ
Please refer to these frequently asked questions about Embrace Joy Yoga and the blog.
General
As a yoga instructor, and human being in general, I believe that all people are wonderfully made and deserving of love and respect. I do not simply teach yoga as a form of exercise. My teaching is informed by yogic philosophy and the principle of loving my neighbor as I love myself. I believe that my teaching should not cause harm or upset to my students, therefore I am careful in the language that I use when teaching classes or leading meditations. As a trauma-informed teacher, my priority is creating a safe place for my students and giving them choice in how they want to engage in their practice.
When I was looking to start a yoga website and eventual business, I knew the name would be important. After much research and brainstorming, I settled on Embrace Joy. This has personal significance to me because after a struggle with disordered eating and body image issues, I finally came to embrace myself as God made me and find joy and fulfilment outside of diet and exercise. Yoga was a huge part of my recovery from disordered eating and I knew I wanted a name for my yoga website that would encompass my journey, as well as inspire others. Hence, Embrace Joy Yoga.
Joyful Movement is a term used in the HAES/IE (Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating) sphere to refer to physical activity for pleasure versus punitive exercise. I believe that everyone deserves to find a form of movement that brings joy to their life and that movement should never be used as a punishment for what one has eaten. I believe that movement should be joyful and accessible to all people, regardless of body shape or size.
Yoga
I am currently a 200 hour registered yoga teacher. I have been teaching yoga for over a year, and have been personally practicing yoga for about 4 years. I studied under Michelle Young of My Vinyasa Practice (Austin, Texas). My training encompassed yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology, adaptive sequencing, Vinyasa, yin, restorative, yoga nidra, and trauma informed yoga. I am currently enrolled as a student of Yoga Therapy through My Vinyasa Practice.
Yes. I am covered under BeYogi insurance.
Before partaking in yoga classes, please consult with your physician. The physical component of yoga can be modified in many ways to accommodate the needs of the student, i.e. pregnancy or injury. Please refer to my tutorials and safety tips on my YouTube channel to learn about alignment and form.
Other
My weekly Zoom yoga classes and monthly Deep Relaxation Yoga Nidra Zoom classes are listed as "Pay What you Want" with the option to join for free. I do this because I believe that yoga should be accessible to anyone who is interested. There is also an option to "buy me a coffee" (suggested $5) if you wish, but it is not required. I also offer my Yoga for Self Care video mini-course for free to newsletter subscribers.
I have developed paid online yoga video courses that are available for purchase through this website. These courses are beginner-friendly and once you purchase, you can access them anytime, anywhere. These "courses" are for personal practice only and not considered yoga teacher training. Stay tuned for additional courses coming soon!
I am in the process of developing a specific Christian Mindfulness and Yoga program that will be available for purchase to use personally or in a small group setting. I am also going to be writing a faith based study on body image. However, my free videos and blog content will not all be specifically "Christian" themed unless described as so in the description of the class.
